Nokia to supply Wireless LAN solution
to NanJing TeleCom in China
(September 03, 2001)
NanJing TeleCom, one of the biggest subsidiaries under China TeleCom, and Nokia,
have agreed to co-operate on initial deliveries of Wireless LAN equipment for
the NanJing International Exhibition Center, which is an Internet
traffic-intense location, a so-called public access zone.
Nokia will supply the necessary Wireless local area network (LAN) access points
and Wireless LAN cards, enabling NanJing TeleCom to offer up to 11Mbit/s access
to Internet services wirelessly. Typical locations where this service will be
offered will initially be corporates, hotels, transport hubs, airports and
similar places where mobile broadband services are required by subscribers. The
implementation of these services helps NanJing Telecom not only to collect more
precise end-users requirements, but also to develop new business models. The
basic system will provide functions such as recognition, authentication and
billing, etc. Furthermore, it will provide flexible authorization and
authentication services based on user ID/password along with a SIM card.
NanJing is the capital city of JiangSu province, which is the one of most
important cities in China. It has a population of about 5.4 million and is a
comprehensive industrial zone and critical transportation and telecommunication
hub in east China. NanJing TeleCom, as one of the leading subsidiaries of China
TeleCom, built and opened the first broadband IP network in China in 2000, and
was awarded "Top ten events of NanJing Economy Development in Year
2000", which also dramatically raised the level of NanJing information
systems.
"Nokia is pleased to extend our cooperation beyond DSL broadband access
business with NanJing TeleCom," says Andrew Page, Director of Broadband
Systems, Nokia Networks China. "The Wireless LAN solution is a first step
in the evolution to the Nokia Operator Wireless LAN solution, where SIM based
authentication allows the mobile operator to integrate Wireless LAN with current
billing systems. Nokia's market leadership in bringing innovative solutions to
the market will assist NanJing TeleCom in being an innovative and advanced
player in the era of the Mobile Information Age."
